Mahale Mountain National Park

Mahale Mountain National Park

Located in the remoteness of the far extreme ends of western Tanzania on the shores of a cobalt blue Lake – Tanganyika which is the world’s longest and second deepest lake in the Mahale Mountains National Park. Named after the Mahale mountain ranges that lie within its borders in the Kigoma region, Mahale National Park is quite simply one of the most beautiful and exceptional parks anywhere in Africa covering an area of about 1,613 sq km. The Mahale Mountains is a paradise for both hikers and chimpanzees.

The Mahale Mountains National Park like its nearby Gombe Stream National Park is best known as the home for some of Africa’s last remaining wild chimpanzees inhabiting a population of approximately 900 Chimpanzees. The forested Mahale mountain slopes are covered in mist at their peaks that cascade down to the lakeshores which are rich in a diversity of great flora and fauna. It has unusual features of Lions co-existing together with the chimpanzees in their sanctuary. Not only it is a haven for primates with Chimpanzee destinations, but the Mahale Mountains National Park is also one of the most picturesque places in Tanzania teeming with life on the Tanganyika Lakeshores magical with blue gin crystal clear freshwaters. The lakeshores are great for snorkeling, swimming, and fishing as well plus the unspoiled finest powder white sandy beaches are incredible for relaxation and pleasure after your adventurous treks and hikes.

Best Time To Visit

It is a Chimpanzee prime destination, The best time to visit the park usually depends on the chimpanzee trekking experiences. In the dry season from June to October, there is very little rain or none at all, few mosquitoes during the day, and the Chimps generally stay on the lower slopes during this period and are easier to find. Between December to March is the best time for bird watchers, with hundreds of migratory and resident species, such as pelicans, storks, ospreys, vultures, and many more in full breeding plumage.

How to get there

Kigoma, the closest major town is about 130km north of Mahale along the lakeshore and makes getting to and from the park half the fun as the only accessibility is by speed boat along Lake Tanganyika. It is also in the far west of Tanzania remoteness. Tourists can access the park from Dar Es Salaam or Arusha by Light air crafts using scheduled chartered flights arranged by different Aircraft companies that take four or five hours to reach the park at Mahale airstrip.
