The Setting

A mountain that writes its own weather.

Ideal weather conditions play a defining role in a successful Kilimanjaro summit. The dry seasons of June to October are widely considered the best time to climb. But why does timing matter so much — and how does the mountain's weather shape your expedition?

The climb is unlike any other walk on earth. You'll move through several distinct climate zones from the forested gate to the glaciated summit — it genuinely feels like traveling from the equator to Antarctica in a matter of days. Whichever route you take, you will cross five ecological belts to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

"Kilimanjaro is tall enough, and close enough to the equator, to invent her own weather."

Kilimanjaro stands at 5,895 m above sea level. With such height and proximity to the equator, the mountain manufactures its own micro-climates. The trade winds — monsoons drawn from the Indian Ocean — are interrupted by the massif, pushed upward, cooled, and released as rain and snow. The result: frequent precipitation, sometimes without any drastic change in temperature.

With dominant winds from the South-east, April and May are the wettest months. If you must climb in this window, avoid the southern slopes — the Rongai Route up the drier northern face is the more prudent choice.

From June to October, strong anti-trade winds blow in from the northeast, carrying little to no moisture. The mountain is relatively cloud-free and dry, especially higher up. We recommend the Machame or Lemosho routes in this season. November marks the start of the northeast monsoon, bringing light rains to the north.

The Windows

Two seasons worth flying for.

Taken together, the best time to climb Kilimanjaro splits into two distinct windows. Both offer different rewards.

Jan – Mar

Crisp & Quiet

Chilly upper slopes with the chance of snow, but uncrowded trails, crystal-clear skies and an unforgettable Full Moon summit.

Lemosho · Machame
Jun – Oct

Peak Season

The driest months on the mountain. Stable weather and the highest summit success — also the most popular, so we lean toward quieter routes.

Northern Circuit · Lemosho
Apr – May

Wet Season

The heaviest rainfall of the year on the southern slopes. We do not recommend climbing in these months.

Avoid
Nov

Short Rains

Beginning of the northeast monsoon — frequent light rains on the northern side. A short, transitional window.

Rongai (cautiously)

The Counsel

Pack with intention. Climb with patience.

We strongly advise avoiding April, May and November for any Kilimanjaro expedition — these are the wettest months and rarely make for a rewarding climb. The coldest months fall between December and March, so plan for snowfall and pack extra warm layers.

One last quiet truth: airfares fluctuate enormously throughout the year, especially around European holiday months. Speak to us early — the right week saves both money and crowds.
