The Philosophy of the Pack

Pack light. Respect your porters. Reach the summit.

Every Timeless Dream Travels Kilimanjaro climb is supported by a small team of guides, cooks and porters who carry your main duffel, tents, kitchen, food, fuel, tables and chairs. That means you conserve energy and focus only on reaching Uhuru Peak.

It also means a strict weight limit — your duffel is capped at 15 kg, and your daypack at 5–10 kg. This is a Park requirement and, more importantly, a matter of porter welfare. Below is our comprehensive, road-tested gear list.

Chapter I

Footwear

01

Footwear is the single most important part of your gear list. The right pair of boots will carry you to Uhuru Peak in quiet confidence; the wrong pair will end your climb early.

Trekking Boots

  • Waterproof hiking boots designed for cool-to-cold conditions
  • Broken in over several weeks before your trip
  • Ankle support and stiff sole for scree and summit night

Running Shoes

  • Comfortable lightweight shoes for pre/post trip and off-mountain use

Hiking Socks

  • Pack woolen, not cotton — cotton retains sweat and causes blisters
  • A spare pair within reach for every day on the trail

Gaiters

  • Keep trekking trousers and boot tops clean
  • Protect trousers from Kilimanjaro's sharp volcanic rock

Chapter II

Clothing

02

Layering wins on Kilimanjaro. In summer, lighter long-sleeves suffice; in the wet season, prioritise warmth and waterproofing. Pack only what you'll actually wear.

  • 4 pairs of thick trekking socks
  • 3–4 thermal undergarments
  • 4 thermal t-shirts
  • Underwear for the duration of the climb
  • 2 thermal long-sleeved tops
  • Regular cotton t-shirts (for camp & lower altitudes)
  • 1 fleece sweater
  • 1 ski mask
  • 1 balaclava
  • 1 sun hat
  • 1 pair of sunglasses with UV protection
  • 1 pair of thin warm gloves
  • 1 pair of thick warm gloves
  • 1 pair of waterproof / rain trousers
  • 1 rain jacket
  • 2 pairs of warm trekking trousers
  • 1 winter down / wind-stopper summit jacket

Chapter III

Toiletries & Medical

03

There are no showers on the mountain — but a warm bucket of water (we call it washy washy) arrives at your tent each day. Pack light, pack practical.

  • Toilet paper
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Wet wipes
  • Small, quick-drying towel
  • Lip balm
  • Sunscreen (high SPF)
  • Plasters & sports tape
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Malaria tablets
  • Diarrhea tablets (a common altitude symptom)
  • Painkillers — for altitude headaches

Chapter IV

Backpack & Daypack

04

You'll travel with two bags. A duffel — carried by your porter on top of their head and shoulders, so a soft duffel rather than a hard-frame pack. And a daypack you carry yourself, limited to 5–10 kg and packed strictly for the day.

Your Daypack Must Include

  • Your prepared first aid kit
  • Sun hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Energy bars
  • 3 L water bottle or hydration bladder
  • Rain trousers & rain jacket
  • Camera
  • Fleece sweater
  • Hiking poles
