Home to more than 120 tribes — discover the heart of Tanzania through the Maasai, the Hadzabe, and the people who shape this land.
Tanzania is home to more than 120 different tribes. While each tribe is unique in its own way and there is a wide array of rich cultures available, visitors are typically exposed to only a few of them due to geographic location and the level of resistance to changes and assimilation that those individual tribes have shown over the years — which is exactly what makes them unique.
The most visible tribe for visitors to Tanzania is the Maasai — the victors of the Nilotic pastoralist tribal and cattle-raiding wars that raged in the East Africa region in the 1800s. Their pride, presence, and fearsome reputation as warriors and lion-killers have earned them special reverence in the eyes of the world.
Secondly, we have the Hadzabe (the 'Bushmen') — people with perhaps the longest history and most ancient traditions, a tribe of hunter-gatherers now settled around Lake Eyasi in the North of Tanzania. Their livelihood is threatened by modern life, but the Hadza have been allocated an area of their own, in which they may continue a lifestyle as close to the traditional as possible.
We think it a wonderful idea to add a bit of Cultural Tourism to every itinerary we propose — it is a wonderful way to discover the heart of the country you are visiting by exploring local cultures and enjoying the history, traditions, food and artworks of different people.
